Media Player Classic Black Edition, abbreviated as MPC-BE, is a free program with a black interface that helps users watch movies and listen to music on computers with a new interface. Media Player Classic – BE is based on the original “Media Player Classic” project (Gabest) and the “Media Player Classic Home Cinema” project (Casimir666), containing additional features and bug fixes.
Both programs are quite similar, as they are based on the original Media Player Classic. Actually, MPC – BE is a fork of MPC-HC, so it can play all video formats that HC supports. But MPC-BE has a few features that are not available in HC. So we’ll just look at what’s different in MPC-BE.
MPC-BE has a modern GUI, with a dark theme for the home screen and all its menus, making it easier on the eyes. You have a preview in MPC-BE, an intuitive search bar, that you can use with precision. It’s quite similar to YouTube’s search preview. This is an incredible feature to have, and one that’s especially useful if you miss the on-screen action.
MPC-BE can play YouTube videos by default without any user settings. Copy the URL of the video you want to play and select the Open file/URL option in the program. Press ok and the video should play. You can set the default video resolution and format from Preferences > Streaming Media Services.
MPC-BE uses an integration option based on YouTube-dl (another open source program), to parse videos from URLs. You can even use the player to search through streaming videos and it works perfectly. It doesn’t search previews for YouTube videos though. It is completely legal to use, as it just streams the video, just like your web browser, and you don’t need to have the browser open in the background while watching the video.
